Case Studies - Falls Prevention

Hollybush House Specialist Care Home

The overall aim of the home is to meet the individual needs of every resident. To achieve this, we use a person-centred approach to care in which each person has a named carer & is offered high levels of support on an individual basis. Activities are an important part of life at Hollybush House & our Activity Therapists & care staff organise a wide range of things to do both inside & outside the home.

Queens Cross Carers Hub Dudley

Located at Queens Cross Network, Dudley, the hub offers information, advice and a range of support to anyone caring for a family member or friend. "Through using this service, we demonstrate to our unpaid carers how RITA operates and how it can enrich the lives of the people who they are caring for in the comfort of their own home.”

One individual would continually walk with purpose for very long periods of time (4 to 5 hours) The individual would then become very tired and unsteady and at risk of falling. The fish tank activity on RITA not only proves to calm his manner and encourage him to sit and rest, it also assists with his mental stimulation.

Richmond Court Care Home Dudley

“There was one lady who was very distressed for an awful amount of the time. She was Punjabi speaking & there was a very difficult language barrier between herself & the staff which seemingly would increase the lady’s distress & anxiety. Using RITA we found a Punjabi movie & the shift in the resident’s mood was drastic.”

Addenbrooke’s Hospital – Falls Prevention Project

The lead Falls Prevention Specialist and Dementia Specialist Nurse piloted the use of Reminiscence Interactive Therapy Activity systems (RITA) on wards with a high incidence of patients with dementia and falls. The aim of the pilot was to ascertain if the intervention of RITA would improve patients’ experience, wellbeing and reduce falls in older people in an acute setting.
